Jakarta, Eyewitness | President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed the Indonesia-Australia Joint Security Treaty. The treaty aims to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

“Today, Prime Minister Albanese and I reaffirmed our close relationship and shared commitment to continue strengthening the Indonesia-Australia partnership. This is achieved through the signing of this Joint Security Treaty,” said President Prabowo in a joint statement with Prime Minister Albanese at the Merdeka Palace on Friday, February 6, 2026.

President Prabowo stated that security cooperation reflects the commitment of both countries to safeguard national security. Indonesia and Australia also want to contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

“This joint security agreement reflects the two countries’ determination to continue working closely together. Working together to safeguard each other’s national security and making a real contribution to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

For Indonesia, cooperation with Australia reflects Indonesia’s commitment to maintaining good relations and is part of its independent and active political policy. Indonesia chooses to build good relations and refuses to sow hostility with other countries, including Australia.

“Indonesia and Australia are destined to live side by side, and we choose to build this relationship on the basis of mutual trust. Indonesia’s good faith seeks friendship with all parties, and we do not want to have any enemies,” he said.

“We believe that this agreement will be an important pillar for stability and cooperation in our region. For Indonesia, this reflects a firm commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and our independent and active foreign policy,” he said.

Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that the Mutual Security Treaty between Indonesia and Australia, signed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is a continuation of the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed by the two countries in 2006. According to the Minister, the treaty focuses on strengthening bilateral consultation mechanisms in the security sector, not the formation of a military alliance or new defense initiatives.

In a press statement at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday, February 6, 2026, the Minister explained that this cooperation includes a regular consultation forum between the leaders and ministers of both countries to discuss the interconnected regional and global security situation. The Minister also emphasized that this cooperation is not a defense pact.

“This is not a defense pact, not a military pact. There is nothing, as previously stated, that a threat to one country is perceived as a threat to another country. Nothing like that. This is a consultation forum on the security situation in the region,” said Minister Sugiono.
