Busyro Muqoddas Urges the Press to Investigate the Impact of the Nickel Industry

JAKARTA, Bali Eyewitness News – Busyro Muqoddas, Chair of the Commission for Education, Training, and Professional Development, has urged members of the press to conduct professional investigations into the impact of the nickel industry on the environment and the lives of local communities. He emphasized the importance of clear, fact-based reporting so that the public can gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding extractive industrial activities.

This message was delivered by Busyro during his opening remarks at the Journalist Competency Test (UKW) held at the Press Council Hall in Jakarta on October 14–15, 2026.

“The impact of nickel extraction is immense,” said Busyro. He highlighted several critical concerns, ranging from environmental degradation to the industry’s effects on public health and the livelihoods of local communities.

Busyro called on journalists to examine these issues through professional research and investigation, and subsequently present their findings to the public with clarity.

“These matters must be thoroughly examined and researched through professional investigation, then reported. The results should then be presented to the public through clear, transparent reporting,” he stated.

According to Busyro, the public requires accurate and comprehensive information to understand issues that directly affect their lives. Therefore, journalistic investigation should not merely stop at reporting events; it must also involve tracing facts, verifying information, and uncovering the underlying issues in depth.

This call serves as a reminder for the press to carry out their journalistic functions professionally and responsibly—particularly when addressing environmental issues and the impact of industrial activities on society. Fact-based reporting is expected to help the public grasp these complex issues while upholding the public’s right to information. (*)
