Jakarta, Eyewitness | Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia on Monday, July 6, 2026, marking the strengthening of relations between the two countries. PM Modi’s arrival in Indonesia was for a three-day state visit.
As a mark of respect, the plane carrying the Indian PM received a special escort from three F-16 fighter jets and two Sukhoi fighter jets upon entering Indonesian airspace. The plane carrying PM Modi landed at approximately 5:20 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta.
President Prabowo’s reception at the aircraft’s landing demonstrated a state salute, demonstrating Indonesia’s closeness and respect for India. At the landing, the two leaders shook hands and exchanged warm smiles.
Afterward, the two leaders walked side by side past a guard of honor accompanied by instrumental music from the Indonesian band and the sound of six cannon salvos.
Also in attendance to welcome PM Modi were Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty, Indian Ambassador to ASEAN Shri Srinivas Gotru, and Indian Defense Attaché to Indonesia Captain Shiv Kumar.
The welcoming atmosphere was further enhanced by a performance of Indonesian dances accompanied by traditional music, a symbol of Indonesia’s hospitality and rich cultural heritage. PM Modi appeared to enjoy and express his appreciation for the dance performance.
Their togetherness throughout the welcoming ceremony at the airport reflected the warm personal relationship and mutual respect between the two leaders.
This state visit is an important opportunity to further strengthen Indonesia and India’s strategic partnership across various sectors. During his stay in Indonesia, PM Modi is scheduled to undertake a series of state engagements with President Prabowo, including an official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, bilateral meetings, and discussions on various strategic cooperation opportunities of mutual interest.
This visit also holds historic significance as PM Narendra Modi’s second visit to Indonesia, following his visit in 2018. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1951, Indonesia and India have continued to build an increasingly close partnership as two major democracies in Asia, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, defense, maritime security, energy, technology, education, and people-to-people relations.
